The latest data from the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) show a rise in obesity rates among Reception Year children for the second year in a row. The rates rose from 9.3% in 2015/16 to 9.6% in 2016/17.

Despite the rise among Reception Year children, the obesity rates remained stable among Year 6 children at 20%.

The NCMP collects data annually on the height and weight of Reception Year and Year 6 Children in state schools in England.

Similar to other years, there was a difference in obesity rates between the richest and poorest areas and boys and girls.
